Save the Planet - Environmentally Friendly Netbooks (Mini Laptops)
Netbooks are generally more environmentally friendly than desktops and laptops. They are smaller (and therefore a smaller carbon footprint) and consume much less energy. But under netbooks, there are some models that are more sustainable than others.
When shopping around for an environmentally friendly netbook, there are three things you need to pay. They should ensure that Energy Star-compliant, that the manufacturer has a good interest rate, Greenpeace, and, if possible,compliant with the RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive). Another certification to look for is the EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool). The world would be a much better place if all electronic products for compliance with these standards.
Found after some searching, I was surprised that the most popular netbooks on the market are not very environmentally friendly. As for the "Green Model" there are two models worth mentioning. They are theToshiba Mini and the Samsung NC10.
It's safe to say that the Toshiba Mini is currently one of the most environmentally friendly model in the market. It is energy start-compliant (5.0), compatible with the RoHS standards and is certified) EPEAT (gold. Many popular netbook models out there like the Asus Eee PC and Acer Aspire one has almost none of these certifications. Unfortunately, Toshiba only score 5.5 (out of 10) in the politics of Greenpeace rating.Nevertheless, credit must be given for the production of the Toshiba Mini Netbook.
Another model worth mentioning is the Samsung NC10. It does not have the certifications of the Toshiba Mini but Samsung scores an impressive 7.1 in the politics of Greenpeace rating. This score is currently one of the highest compared to many other electronics manufacturers in the market.
