Even if the obvious answer seems to be yes, given the amount of news about everybody launching this type of gadget, there are a lot of skeptics that don’t see touch tablets getting a stable settlement in our already crowded tech world.

With this article I’ll try and dissect this problem both ways and see what my take on this matter will be. First, I need to mention that touch tablet devices are not a new concept, as pc touch tablets existed since at least a few years, which in IT terms means a lot. There were a lot of reasons tablet PCs didn’t caught to public, but the main problems were price (way too expensive) and lack of dedicated software that would take advantage of the new input method.

Now things have changed: hardware become more powerful, battery life went up, devices are slimmer, touchscreens now register the slightest contact and tablets are cheaper now, this being one very important thing to remember.

The only question that remains to be answer is whether we need tablets and where to place them in the IT ‘trophic chain’. I believe they have a place right between netbooks and MIDs/big screen smartphones. Tablets should be regarded as a less powerful laptop, which could be used mainly for browsing, media watching, music, email checking and occasional office stuff.

Future tablets should be cheaper, slimmer and low weight to get to masses as a casual use device. Apple opened the way with iPad, not it remains to be seen what others will do with their vision of how a tablet should work and do.
